Step One: Add Text To your Header Graphic |
Step 1.1: Click FILE > OPEN and open header.psd from your hard drive.
Step 1.2: Click the "T" icon in the TOOLBAR

Step 1.3:
Hit the "D" key on the keyboard and let go, then hit the "X" key. That changes it so the default text color is white (foreground color as shown above) and black as the background color.
Step 1.4:
Now go to your document (header.psd) and type some text on it, like this:

Step 1.5:
What you want to do now is to format the text so the font size is right.
You do this by selecting the FONT TOOL, then go to the OPTIONS BAR at the top, which looks like this:

From there you can set the font TYPE, FONT SIZE, and add any accents like BOLD text options.
Step 1.6: Click to make sure the TYPE TOOL is selected, but do NOT touch the text on your image.
Step 1.7: Now go to the OPTIONS BAR and click the name of the font, like this, then scroll through the list with your mouse scroll wheel, or hit the DOWN ARROW on your keyboard and go through them one at a time, while watching below to see which font looks the best.
When you have a font you want to use, hit ENTER on your keyboard to apply it.
Now you're going to choose the right size, so do the same as above, by making sure the TEXT TOOL is selected, then go to the font SIZE option and highlight the existing size, then hit the DOWN ARROW or UP ARROW on the keyboard
What that does is DESELECTS the text, but leaves it so you can change the fonts in the drop down list and see the changes appear below instantly.
Tip: If the font style you want to use does not offer a "built in" BOLD or ITALIC option (some fonts don't, like Impact) then what you can do is apply a FAUX BOLD or FAUX ITALIC style, like this:
Adding a FAUX BOLD style to IMPACT fonts isn't recommended of course, because they're plenty thick enough, but adding a FAUX ITALIC can be done.
And of course you may be using a different font, so experiment with the various options to see what you can come up with.
